EDUCATION Our students are still arriving in great numbers every Wednesdayevening. Five are doing the Duke of Edinburgh award bronze and two are doing silver. Three of the boys doing the bronze also come here on a Saturday. They are a great help to us and the patients love to see the youngsters enjoying being in Sandville. Last Wednesday evening we had a lovely surprise visit from Richard Hnyda who is now a 4th year medical student and spent two years here when he was 16 years old gaining experience. He was certainly an inspiration to our group of students that were here. He will be back in March as a guest speaker.
We closed on the 2nd of January for 2 weeks during which time we were able to thoroughly clean the premises. My sincere thanks to all those volunteers who gave their valuable time to assist us in this mammoth task. Our biggest undertaking has been the hydrotherapy pool area, which has had a completely new floor; walls have been tiled and everywhere painted. This as you can imagine has been a huge undertaking and hopefully will open on the 5th of February so I will give an update in next months issue.
Jan.7th although we were officially closed this was the only day we could hold our Annual children’s Christmas party from 3pm to 6pm but actually went on until 7pm.As always it was a great success enjoyed by the children, parents and grand parents. Party games were played and the buffet bring and share was superb and enjoyed by everyone. Thanks go to Gary who was the MC and to Wendy and Jack for their help too.
14thThis was the 5th volunteers lunch to be held here. The buffet meal was second to none and provided by Gareth in “The Prince”. Irene our vice chairman, Garry, Peggy and myself, served it and indeed there was plenty for everyone. We had entertainment from a first class pianist called Louis and despite it being his first time here to entertain us he was soon very much at home, we are hoping he will come back to entertain the patients in the future.
Sat 14th TWELFTH NIGHT was a week later than usual but again became the best night of the year. It was a huge success and once again Barclays Bank staff sold raffle tickets along with the team of workers under the umbrella of Arthur and Marilyn Beale. The meal was superb as always and the fancy dress costumes were outstanding and gave all the judges a very hard time, which included, Cathy and Neil Poacher, Ivan and Alyson Evans, a Mr and Mrs Clark and myself. Money raised on the night will be presented to us on the 5thFebruary during the afternoon tea along with Barclays Bank doubling the raffle takings. Bouquets of flowers were presented to the ladies by courtesy of Gutteridges Florist and whiskey for the men, what a night!!
Sat.21st and 28th A course of “Trans-Form” was held in our Therapy complex organised by our friends Lisa and Todd from Bristol. Seven people took part on both days, This was the second course they had done here and both went very successfully.
The National Conference for cancer support groups, held in Manchester every July for four days, held a meeting here with seven of the committee attending. They came from all over the country and we were delighted to have them for the weekend.
I was invited to attend the AGM of the Mental Health Matters Wales at Nolton Church Hall Bridgend. Helen Chappell accompanied me and following the meeting a talk was given by Beth Hart Nell co facilitator of Bridgend B-Eat self help group. We both learnt so much from this dynamic young lady that I invited her to come to Sandville to speak to our students in March.
